Bring your devices in

An 80-second film: connect Home Assistant in the web app, sync your devices in, and see them land in their rooms.

Your lights, sensors and cameras already live in Home Assistant. Connect it to Charyl once, and she can tell you what they’re doing and help you use them. If you brought your devices in when you set up your box, they’re already here. If not, this is how.

80 seconds, captioned. The screens are the real web app showing a demo home. The conversation with Charyl near the end is an illustration.

Three habits

  1. Connect once. Settings → Home Assistant: its address and a long-lived access token.
  2. Sync to bring them in. Devices → Sync with Home Assistant shows what’s new. Nothing changes until you apply it.
  3. Place them on the map. Devices whose Home Assistant area matches a room land in that room. The rest wait under Unassigned.

How it goes

  1. Open Settings, then Home Assistant

In the web app, open Settings and choose the Home Assistant tab.

  2. Enter the address and a token

Enter your Home Assistant’s address. Then, in Home Assistant, open your profile, choose Security, and create a long-lived access token. Paste it into the token field. It’s stored encrypted.

  3. Test, then save

Click Test Connection. When it says you’re connected, click Save.

  4. Sync with Home Assistant

Open Devices and choose Sync with Home Assistant. Charyl shows you every device in Home Assistant that isn’t here yet.

  5. Review and apply

Check each device’s name and type, and queue it, or choose Queue All. Then click Apply Changes.

  6. Place the rest

A device goes into a room when its Home Assistant area has the same name as exactly one of your rooms. Everything else waits under Unassigned: place it on the map in the floor editor (see Map your home). Rooms are matched only when a device is first brought in, so devices you brought in before drawing your rooms are placed by hand.

Added something new in Home Assistant later? Sync again. Then ask Charyl what the temperature is in the bedroom, or to turn off the porch light. She asks you to confirm before anything changes.
