Map your home
A two-minute film: draw your rooms in the web app, join them, add doors, devices and furniture, and record each room's flooring and paint.
Once your rooms are on the map, Charyl knows which room each of your devices is in, and what’s on the walls and floors of every one. You draw the map once, in the web app’s floor editor, and it’s quicker than it looks: rough rooms first, then join them up, then the details.
Three habits that make it quick
- Draw it roughly. Drag out a rectangle for each room. You fix the size afterwards by dragging its walls, so don’t measure first.
- Join the walls. Drag a room up against its neighbour, and the touching walls become one shared wall. Move a shared wall and both rooms change with it.
- Then add the details: doors and windows, devices, furniture, and each room’s finishes.
How it goes
-
Open Rooms and choose your floor
In the web app, open Rooms and pick the floor. The fullscreen button gives the plan the whole window.
-
Draw a room, then name it
Click Draw Room and drag out a rectangle. In the side panel, give it a name and a room type. The type tells Charyl what kind of room it is and shades the plan, so utility rooms and outdoor spaces stand out.
-
Join the next one
Draw the next room, then drag it up against its neighbour. When the walls touch they join into one shared wall. To move a joined room somewhere else, select it and choose Detach first.
-
Change the shape
Drag a wall to change a room’s size. Double-click a wall to add a corner, then drag the corner into whatever shape you need.
-
Doors and windows
Click a wall and choose Add Door or Add Window. Slide it along the wall, then set its width and its style (hinged, double, pocket, garage or an open passage), and for a door that swings, which side its hinges are on.
-
Devices and furniture
On the Devices tab, pick a device and click where it lives. Cameras, thermostats and motion sensors snap to the nearest wall, and you can turn a camera to face the way it looks. Furniture works the same way from the Furniture tab; press R to turn a piece.
-
Flooring and paint
Select a room and, under Finishes, add its flooring and its paint: the brand, the colour name, and the colour code — “SW 7029”, say. The code is what a paint counter needs.
The plan saves itself as you go, and Undo steps back through changes to the plan.
What you’re left with
A floor plan of your home that Charyl can read: which room each device is in, and what each room’s walls and floors are made of. Ask her a year from now what colour the living room is, and she’ll have the answer.
