What does "private" mean for a record?

Marking a Home Record private keeps its contents out of anything Charyl reads — its text never reaches an AI provider at all, in a question about it or otherwise. She can still tell you the record’s title, its category, and its dates, and confirm that it’s on file, but she can’t read it back to you or answer questions about what it says. A few sensitive categories — a deed, a mortgage, a tax filing — start out private by default, on the theory that most people would rather opt in than opt out for those.
Per record, not all-or-nothing
Privacy is set record by record, not as one household-wide switch. You decide which documents Charyl can actually read, one at a time, and can change your mind on any of them later.
This is a deliberate boundary, not a workaround — even records that aren’t marked private stay inside the same protections described in what happens when Charyl uses a cloud AI.
