Your box holds the record of your home: assets, spaces, devices, sensor history, and the rules you’ve written, plus Home Assistant if you’re using it. That part is deterministic and local — it keeps running, on your own hardware, whether or not anything in the cloud is reachable.
Charyl’s conversation works differently. On the box, chat routes through Charyl Cloud by default, where your subscription covers the AI behind her answers. If you self-host on hardware capable of running a local model, chat can stay on your own machine instead — placement is automatic: the platform looks for a capable local model first, then your own key, and only reaches Charyl Cloud after that. Product research always runs through Charyl Cloud, on any path — there’s no local version of it.
Backups and remote access
When you’re paired to Charyl Cloud, your nightly backups and the relay that lets your phone reach home from anywhere also run through it — both described in their own answers.
