Charyl isn't answering — what should I check?

Check three things in order: is the box reachable, what chat route is active, and whether your subscription (if you rely on Charyl Cloud) is still active.

  1. Confirm the box itself is up

If the rest of the web app or mobile app is also unresponsive, the problem is the box, not Charyl specifically — see the box is on but the app can’t find it for that check instead.

  2. Check what chat route is active

Charyl’s chat automatically picks, in order: a capable local model, then your own AI-provider key, then Charyl Cloud if your subscription is active. If none of those apply, chat has nothing to route to.

  3. If you rely on Charyl Cloud, check your subscription

A lapsed subscription silently leaves chat with no route. This is a known rough edge: the message you’ll actually see in that state wasn’t written for a lapsed subscriber, so it won’t clearly tell you to resubscribe — we’re fixing that.

One generic error covers several causes

Right now, a stalled or failed answer shows the same generic message — “that answer got cut off” — whether the real cause is a slow connection, a used-up usage budget, or a lapsed subscription. Retrying helps for a slow connection; it won’t help for the other two. This is a known gap we haven’t closed yet.
